reaction, or when we realize that what reached the other person is different from what we thought we had communicated.<\/p><p id=\"ember60\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">We like to believe that people hear what we want to say or that we are satisfied with the \u201csubtle\u201d message we have conveyed in a neutral form, perhaps even with a positive note at times.<\/p><h3 id=\"ember61\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">In reality, people also hear what we don\u2019t say.<\/h3><p id=\"ember62\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">I hear the tension. I hear the hesitation. I hear the defense. I hear the judgment. I hear the fear. Sometimes even clearer than the words themselves.<\/p><p id=\"ember63\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Language is a curious and complex thing. We use it to communicate with others, but without realizing it, how it frames us\u2026 in the way we relate to conflict, vulnerability, power, rejection\u2026 in a brief need to be right or to be understood.<\/p><h3 id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">When we say \u201ethat\u2019s not what I meant\u201d, it\u2019s rarely just a semantic misunderstanding.<\/h3><p id=\"ember65\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Sometimes it is regret at seeing the effect of one's own words. Other times it is fear of losing the other person's approval. Sometimes it is a justification. Other times it is a subtle attempt to regain control over the meaning of a conversation that has taken a direction we did not anticipate.<\/p><h3 id=\"ember66\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Something was leaked about us that we didn't intend to reveal.<\/h3><p id=\"ember67\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A wound. A rage. A vulnerability. A need for validation, a fear that we were not prepared to acknowledge even in front of ourselves. It becomes thus difficult to accept the part of ourselves that generated them as well.<\/p><p id=\"ember68\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The way we judge shows something of our own struggles. The way we support shows something of our ability to support ourselves. And the way we hurt shows, sometimes, the places where we still hurt.<\/p><hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/><p id=\"ember69\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Was there fear?<\/em><\/p><p id=\"ember70\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Was it a shame?<\/em><\/p><p id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Was it a need for control?<\/em><\/p><p id=\"ember72\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Was it the desire to be seen?<\/em><\/p><p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Was it a need to protect something fragile?<\/em><\/p><hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/><p id=\"ember74\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Words do not betray us; they reveal us.<\/p><h3 id=\"ember75\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">What we call misunderstanding can
