„Why do you misunderstand me?”

Maybe because we don’t meet by chance in conversations…

There are conversations we forget in a few minutes and conversations that stay with us for years. Some comfort us, others provoke us. Some inspire us, others irritate us disproportionately. And maybe the interesting question isn’t always „What did this person tell me?”, But „What activated this person in me?”.

Because we rarely react solely to words. We react to what they touch on, what they confirm, what they contradict and what they bring to the surface. Sometimes, an apparently banal sentence can have an unexpected impact. Not because it is extraordinary in itself, but because it encounters something that was already present within us and waiting to be seen.

Perhaps that is why two people can participate in the same conversation and leave with completely different experiences. Not because one understood well what the other did wrong, but because each encounters the conversation from a different place. From their own life moment. From their own questions, hopes, wounds, or searches. In reality, we never just listen to the words. We also listen through the filter of what we have experienced before.

Sometimes we have the impression that we choose the conversations. But there are moments when it seems that the conversations choose us as well. They appear exactly when we are ready to hear something that we couldn’t understand before or when we can no longer avoid what we need to see. The same words, spoken a year earlier, might not have meant anything. The same message, in another context of life, might have gone completely unnoticed.

Perhaps this is also the reason why certain people appear in our lives exactly when we need them. Not to provide us with answers, but to help us see the questions we already carry. Sometimes through support. Other times through contradiction. Sometimes through validation. Sometimes through discomfort. Not all encounters come to confirm what we know. Some come to shatter what we thought we knew.

We tend to view relationships as meetings between two people. But often they are meetings between two histories, two belief systems, two ways of seeing the world and two inner universes. In that space something fascinating appears: mirroring.

We don’t always see in others what they are. Sometimes we see what we admire. Other times we see what we reject. Sometimes we see what we lack. Other times we see what we haven’t yet allowed ourselves to become. Perhaps that is why certain people move us without explanation, and others irritate us without an apparent, proportional reason. Not because they are the source of our experience, but because they touch upon something that already exists.

Perhaps synchronicity doesn’t mean that the universe is constantly sending us mysterious messages. Perhaps it means that we become sufficiently available to observe what we couldn’t see before. And then people, conversations, and experiences take on a new meaning. Not because they have changed, but because we have changed.

That is why I sometimes wonder if the important question after a meaningful conversation is not „What did this person want to tell me?”, But „What part of me came to meet this conversation?”. Because sometimes the most valuable information is not what we hear, but what begins to move within us while we listen.

Maybe not all misunderstandings are problems of communication. Maybe some are encounters between two different histories that try to make sense of the same reality. And maybe certain conversations do not appear to give us certainty, but to change, almost imperceptibly, the direction from which we look at life.

And sometimes, this is enough.
