Trust

“I trust you until you break my trust.”

We were perhaps taught from childhood to be careful “with people”. As adults we continue to live relationships in a conditional form: “only until”.

But is it trust that is betrayed, or our expectation that the other person should behave according to our desires?

“To offer trust” is a mirror of our vulnerabilities, which we need to “host” for a while in the other. We can gently take them back, as gracefully as possible in that moment, and care for them ourselves—continuing to practice relationships rooted in trust.

What we have to learn now is to be careful“for people”. The pillars and resources of trust are dynamic, much like our everyday actions and reactions, our behaviours, not always conscious, reverberating in more subtle substrata.

The feeling of loss is difficult… the frustration of feeling lied to, betrayed, or abandoned brings regret and shame. How often do we have the courage to look at a relationship even when it hurts, or when we feel angry and disappointed—to look at our choices and understand them… to accept the place from which the other made their own choices?

It is not easy; at times it may feel heartbreaking or even impossible. Yet if you give it a little time and the intention of “about you,” it becomes liberating.

We sometimes bind our lives too easily to people and situations, even as they themselves change, transform, and move on. Choosing to move forward “with yourself” may become your most important resource for a perspective you can dream into and participate in.

Although it seems to be a process or a quality, it has become a social stigma of “relationships built on trust”.
