… never by chance!!
Family is not only a set of conscious or unconscious relationships, nor just a sequence of formal ties or a repertoire of emotions. It is, at the same time, an invisible fabric of connections—some inherited epigenetically, others discovered through the heart. Genetic ties formalize the immediate core, yet we often feel a deep and inexplicable familiarity with people who do not share our blood—friends, colleagues, acquaintances.
Family, in a broader sense, is not defined by duties or obligations. It is rather the presence of others in our lives—the people who simply exist alongside us and share life’s paths with us. In this way, the entire world can become a “Big Family,” a space in which every encounter and every separation contribute to our understanding of expanded connection and meaning.
This invisible thread of family invites us to trust—even when we do not understand, when it hurts, when we are called to give or receive support. The Big Family can complement the family of origin, offering us resources, values, rhythms, and experiences we did not choose, but which shape us.
Looking around, we can observe who has entered our lives, who has left, who remains, and who is yet to come. We do not know how, for how long, or in what way we will transform, but we know that, in one way or another, we are here for one another.
If our relationship with our family of origin is unclear or painful, expanding this perspective may feel difficult—and that is natural. The process cannot be rushed. Life, in its subtle rhythm, offers us moments in which we can recalibrate, understand, and learn to live in acceptance.
Perhaps the essence of it is simple: to be present. To be present in our relationships, in times of sorrow and joy, in meetings and partings. In this presence lies, perhaps, the true measure of the family—the small one, the large one, and the whole fabric of connections that bind us to life and to the world… never by chance!
